Airships & Composite materials

 

 

To site some new hvirflas related with fast development of the composite materials (which fundamentally reshapes the reality) I think it is worth to bring 3 examples related with advancement of innovations in Airshiping – new emerging sector of the world economy, which eventually may introduce new reality in various spheres of human activities.


In my view Airshiping development in Armenia may provide significant boost to development of the remote areas as in the sphere of agriculture so and in tourism.

 

1. Lockheed Martin - P-791 Hybrid Aircraft


  • As an eye in the sky, this remarkable airship can stay aloft for up to three weeks at an altitude of 20,000 feet.

 

  • An affordable and environmentally sensitive solution, the Hybrid Air Vehicle is more fuel efficient than any other flying system, consuming less than a third the fuel of a fixed wing aircraft to accomplish the same mission.

 

  • Using an innovative air cushion landing system, the airship can launch and land easily in open fields, parking lots or even on water using its innovative air cushion landing system.

2. The Walrus HULA (DAPRA project ) is a proposed Hybrid Ultra Large Aircraft


  • The goal is to create an airship capable of traveling up to 12,000 nautical miles (about 22,000 km) in range, while carrying 500-1000 tons of cargo.

 

  • In distinct contrast to earlier generation airships, the Walrus HULA will be a heavier-than-air vehicle and will generate lift through a combination of aerodynamics, thrust vectoring, and gas buoyancy generation and management.

3. SkyKitten

 

Long Range and High Endurance: the standard operating range of the SkyCat-20 with 16 tons payload is 2,400 nautical miles at cruise, enabling the vehicle in a surveillance role (for instance) to remain on station for up to 10 days at a time if required. The standard range for the SkyCat-220 is 3,250 nautical miles, making it ideal for bulk transport – (e.g.) of fresh produce direct from grower to market.

 

  • Low Maintenance: scheduled maintenance is just 2 weeks per annum and can be conducted in the field without need of hangaring.

 

  • High Fuel Efficiency: with its two stern engines running in the wake of the hull, the SkyCat achieves high fuel efficiencies due to reduced vehicle drag. The fuel burn per ton/km for the SkyCat-20 is well under 50% of that of a C-130J transport aircraft and just 25% that of a 40-ton truck.

 

  • Low Infrastructural Requirement: able to land and take off from any reasonably flat terrain, water included, without the need for runways, hangars, ground crews or handling equipment, the SkyCat offers the ideal, environmentally sensitive vehicle for transport over long distances into remote regions.

The economic case for investment in science and research

In view of the later proactive discussions over Armenian science reformation strategic issues I suggest to my blog readers to overview the Science & Innovation Investment Framework 2004-2014 of UK:

In particularly I do advise to pay attention to the following segment at page 150 (of the report numeration):

A.8 Companies may not, however, invest sufficiently in R&D, particularly in more long-term research, because the benefit of their efforts may spill over on to other companies. They may also find it difficult to find sources of financing that give them the
means to hedge against the risk inherent in these activities. Government can help companies to overcome these difficulties through instruments such as R&D tax credits, the patent system and a number of DTI innovation programmes, which include R&D
Grants, Collaborative R&D and Grants for Investigating an Innovative Idea. Chapter 4 explains the Government’s approach to supporting business R&D.
